Solanum spp.
Solanum is a wide ranging genus of flowering plants including many important food crops. Eggplant, potatoes, and tomatoes are just a few of the more than 2000 species that make up Solanum. Most of the genus is toxic to humans, including the infamous deadly nightshade (Solanum nigrum). Food crop varieties that we know and love are primarily the result of selectively breeding to minimize the levels of toxin produced.
